Individual Therapy

In this format we work one on one to explore and learn more about who you are and unblock obstacles to move towards what you desire in your life, whether that is feeling more confident, having richer relationships, having a more fulfilling work life, or simply to know yourself better. We work in collaboration to explore your inner dynamics and work towards creating ease and confidence within yourself.

Along with studying what you’re conscious of, I work with unconscious material and welcome that into sessions through dreams, images, associations, impressions. One of my gifts is being in tune with what’s happening on the unconscious level — sensations in the body, dreams, images that come to mind — while making connections to what we know, think, and believe consciously. Often our history and our experiences are carried in our physical body as pain, discomfort, or illness. These messages are instructive for therapy work as they help us to listen to your body’s wisdom so we can heal the underlying hurts.  I have found that truly rich and lasting change comes when all these aspects of who you are can work in concert.

I also give special attention to understanding the barriers that prevent you from taking ownership of your life and stepping fully into your personal power. These include barriers from your own lived experience and the larger systemic forces that are at play in all of us. These systemic forces that are oppressive in nature include racism, sexism, ageism, heterosexism, ableism. Our goal is to examine how these larger forces are imbedded in you and influence your decisions, perhaps beyond your awareness. We work to take your power back so you can make conscious decisions about how you want to live your life and interact with the world around you.

The type of therapy I offer is longer term, ranging anywhere from 6 months to years. Creating deep and lasting change in your life requires the time it takes to establish a working relationship. Our therapeutic relationship creates the container for which deeper parts of yourself can emerge and conflicts can find resolution.

Group Therapy

In this form of therapy, we work together in a diverse group of adults of different ages, backgrounds, and reasons for pursuing therapy. The group setting is a wonderful place to understand yourself in the context of relationships. There’s a kind of synergy in the group setting that allows deep work to occur in a unique way. Here we get to work with the interplay of your individual experience and being an integral part of the collective. One of the greatest gifts of group work is that it provides a space to learn to be fully who you are while also being in relationship with others. Learning how to be simultaneously separate and connected.

There is also the opportunity to work with and refine all your feelings that emerge around differences between you and others, and to potentially experience the benefits of diversity in all its various forms. Although sharing similarities is an important part of the group experience, we’re cultivating diversity rather than homogeneity. Diversity of identity, thought, and your unique contribution to the whole. In order to authentically embrace diversity, you must first learn how to establish a solid sense of yourself. From there it’s possible to listen to perspectives different from your own, communicate your own perspective clearly, and transform conflict.

Some themes that you might come to group to work on:

  • belonging and exclusion

  • interrelatedness versus enmeshment

  • vulnerability/intimacy

  • creating intact boundaries

  • separateness and connection

  • giving and receiving

  • envy and competition

  • similarities and differences

  • hunger, need, desire

  • navigating conflict

  • deprivation and prosperity

My role in the group setting is to create an effective container for this work to occur. I may be in a more active role at times and at other times I will be more quiet, but my goal is to simultaneously hold your individual experience in the group and the collective experience of the group. I encourage and teach group members to listen to their body and notice their emotions as these interactions occur so we can gain more awareness into your relational patterns.  As we gain this knowledge through learning about these patterns over time, there is also space for significant healing to occur as you experience people being with you and being present to yourself in new ways.

Group is often challenging as it stretches our capacity to tolerate a range of feelings that emerge in interacting with others, but it can be very rewarding work. It is where beautiful and lasting change can occur. I have spent many years in advanced study of group work because of how valuable it is as a therapy modality. Group therapy can be effective alone or in conjunction with individual therapy.

If you are interested in participating in group therapy, we will first schedule a series of one to three individual sessions to prepare you for entering the group setting.

Couples Therapy

Couple relationships can be the source of a lot of pain and also the source of tremendous fulfillment. The struggle we experience with our partners touches vulnerable and beautiful places within that most other relationships cannot touch and therefore we don’t usually have access to those places. From this vantage point, the couple struggle provides us with an incredible opportunity to turn towards and heal vulnerable places and to expand as individuals and together as a couple.

Like in group work, I work with couples to foster separateness and connection, embracing and respecting both of your differences while finding genuine connection.  I work with couples to find clarity in knowing what you want, communicating your desires and limits, and learning to really listen to your partner.

Couples work is a collaboration between you, your partner, and me.  In couples work, we build tolerance for the difficult feeling states that the relationship surfaces so we can allow the full range of your experience with your partner to inform us. Together we observe the dynamics of your relationship, both loving and harmful, and allow this awareness to pave the way for creating new dynamics that better serve you. We practice new skills of listening, communicating, giving and receiving. Because of the complexity of couple dynamics, this work can at times be messy. That might mean there are tears or tense voices or stalemates. The mess is not only okay but welcomed because it’s an important part of the process.  This is not easy work but it’s worthwhile in order to have a thriving relationship. Thriving couple relationships have the ability to feed those around them, including the family unit and the larger community.

I can hold all that is beautiful and loving about you and also acknowledge places for you to evolve. If this idea is new to you, and you’re interested in it, I would love to teach you how to love yourself while also holding space for growth and change in yourself and your relationship.

Couples therapy is a great space to explore:

  • emotional and sexual intimacy

  • clarity on agreements

  • complex couple arrangements

  • effective communication

  • obstacles to giving and receiving

  • complex family situations and raising children

  • balance of togetherness and separateness

I work with healing professionals who are interested in engaging in deeper work so they can better understand and care for themselves as they show up for their clients. In many healing professions, we use our bodies and psyches as instruments, and it takes skill and practice to learn to effectively use ourselves in this way. For instance, you may have noticed that you feel agitated with some clients, with others you feel sleepy, with others you feel tense and uptight. Our bodies are our tools to a deeper understanding of our clients if we learn to listen to them and decode the communication.

When we use ourselves as instruments, our work with clients can take up space in our body and mind. Over time in your work life, you can feel overwhelmed or fatigued. Learning to differentiate your clients’ psychic material from your own, and using that knowledge to understand them enables you to maintain your own health and work more effectively with your clients in the long term.

I also provide consultation for professionals around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These are blindspots for all of us that require special attention and creativity in thinking in order to engage in ethical practice and to be clinically competent.

I work with all healing professionals, including allopathic and naturopathic medical fields, psychotherapists, nutritionists, and body workers. If you are interested in more deeply knowing yourself so you can bring new life to your work with clients, I would love to talk more.
